Paul Horsted > C.B. Manville image of "Anvill (sic) Rock from above Deadwood". Anvil Rock has fallen down since this image was made, and is not a "known landmark" in the modern world. Modern view shows area at north end of Deadwood, highways leading to Sturgis and Spearfish in distance. Taken from north end of "White Rocks" above Deadwood. Historic image courtesy Larry Ness. ©Paul Horsted, All Rights Reserved.
Paul Horsted > Caption on back of original image says "Published by A. Pollock". One source says this is the first house built in Hot Springs. The town was laid out in 1882, so this image may pre-date that time. Modern image shows the town as it looks today. Historic image courtesy Brian Bade. ©Paul Horsted, All Rights Reserved.
Paul Horsted > Lock & McBride (or Locke & Peterson...caption on photo differs from mount) circa 1890's, image showing Harney Peak through a gap in large rock formation. Photo caption indicates "on the B&M Railway" though it is a couple miles to the railroad bed, which is now the Mickelson Trail. The gravel road which now passes through this gap is called Palmer Creek Road, and runs between Hwy. 244 and Hwy. 87, southeast of Hill City, S.D. Historic image courtesy Adams Museum & House. ©Paul Horsted, All Rights Reserved.

Korn, also shown in the photo, who rescued the horse at the battlefield) at Ft. Meade. There's more to this story, too much to tell here... Modern view taken within 25 feet of original site based on careful comparison of nearby hills and buildings at the fort in background. Bear Butte looms in distance.
