The original photo (top) was taken by a photographer named Graves, of Portland, OR, on June 8, 1914. Paul Horsted saw this original image hanging at the Rapid City Fire Department, and obtained permission to scan it, then try to replicate it from the same camera position. It rained on June 8, 2009, so a day later, on June 9, Paul made the image at bottom. Several homes appear in both photos, and the growth of trees in the city and on the hills beyond is quite apparent.
These panoramic images stretch across more than 180 degrees, so at far left (to the west) is Skyline Drive and Dinosaur Hill, while at far right is looking into east Rapid City.
